Everything brings us back to the body
Ehsan Hemat
“Everything brings us back to the body” (“Alles draait uiteindelijk om het lichaam”), schreef Achille Mbembe in 2020 in zijn essay The Universal Right to Breathe, als reactie op de eerste coronalockdowns. Datzelfde jaar begon Ehsan Hemat met het maken van deze voorstelling. Hierin onderzoekt hij wat het menselijk lichaam allemaal kan met een koperen plaat van 18 kilo.
Hemat haalt inspiratie uit de poëzie van Rumi en de Gaia-theorie. Hij gebruikt deze ideeën om te spelen met reflectie en echo. Het resultaat is een voorstelling waarin mens en object samen dansen als gelijken. Maar achter de prachtige beelden zit een diepere boodschap: een verhaal over uitbuiting, schade aan de natuur en het recht om vrij te ademen.

The same year Ehsan Hemat started the preliminary research for this work which explores the physical possibilities in relation to an 18-kilo brass sheet and uses the poetry of Rumi and Gaia theory as departure points to play with reflection and echo. The resulting performance is a duet between the human and non-human as equal partners, a dialogue between the body and the core of the earth, using movement, sound and voice, and honouring the violent histories behind the beautiful imagery – histories of exploitation, ecological degradation, and a denied right to breathe.
